Admission

Unless otherwise instructed, please arrive at the Admitting/Patient Access Services Office upon your arrival. In the Admitting/Patient Access Services Office, you will be asked to supply your insurance and other information. At this time, you will also receive a wristband. Please keep this wristband on during your entire hospital stay. It is used as your positive identification and as a safeguard for your protection.

 

Café and Coffee Shop

Josephine’s Café

Location: Ground floor of the hospital

 

Hours:

6:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

 

Josephine’s Cafe offers full-service hot meals, ready-to-eat items and a selection of grab-and-go items.

 

Gourmet-to-Go Coffee Shop

Location: First floor of the hospital

 

Hours:

Monday through Friday: 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Saturday: 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

 

The coffee shop offers Starbucks coffee, assorted drinks, baked goods, specialty wraps and salads.

 

Electrical Appliances

Electrical appliances, including electric razors, hairdryers, fans, clocks, radios or TVs, are not permitted in patient rooms. You may only use battery-operated devices.

 

Fire Safety

Fire drills are held regularly. Please stay in your room until the drill is complete.

 

Flowers

Flowers are delivered to your room as soon as possible.

 

Language and Communication Access Services (LCAS)

The Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Health Literacy (ODIHL) provides Language and Communication Access Services for people with limited English proficiency (LEP) or for people who prefer to have their health information provided in a language other than English. Free medical interpretation and document translation services are available 24/7.

 

Sign language interpretation services for deaf and hearing-impaired patients and specific communication tools for speech-impaired patients are also available. Language assistance coordinators at each facility provide support and guidance and ensure that our patients’ unique communication needs are met. Lost and Found

The hospital’s Lost and Found is maintained by the Security Department. To reach Security, call ext. 6323.

 

Mail

Mail is delivered to your room by volunteers on a daily basis and is forwarded to your home after discharge.

 

Meal Service

During your stay, a nutrition ambassador will take your order at your bedside for each meal. We offer a variety of meals, including

vegetarian, vegan, Kosher, Halal and gluten-free meals. Our menus are built by certified chefs and registered dietitians. Tell staff about your food preferences or other special requests. Registered dietitians are available for nutritional education—ask your nurse to arrange a consultation for you.

 

A complimentary pantry is located on each nursing unit with a variety of beverages and snacks. In addition, a hospitality cart visits each unit daily, offering hot beverages, fresh fruit and assorted snack items.

 

A chef is always available to discuss your menu with you at (516) 256-MENU (6368), or at ext. 6368 from your bedside phone. Call our diet clerks from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. with any menu-related questions or concerns at (516) 256-MENU (6368).

 

Medications

Bring a list of your home medications with you, but leave them at home. While you are in the hospital, medications will be prescribed and provided for you.

 

Parking

Long Island Jewish Valley Stream’s main visitor parking area is the Robert M. Blakeman Field, located just north of the hospital along the Southern State Parkway service road. Free valet parking is available Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Arriving vehicles will be serviced until 4:30 p.m. (However, cars may be picked up until 6:00 p.m. from Valet or Security personnel.)


Pastoral Care

The volunteer Pastoral Care staff offers you spiritual help during your hospital stay. A Catholic priest is available to patients upon request. Other faith clergy also visit the hospital on a regular basis. A Catholic mass is held weekly in our meditation room, located on the second floor. For more information, please call ext. 6050.

 

Personal Belongings and Valuables

If you have valuables, such as jewelry and cash, please give them to a relative or friend to take care of during your stay. You may want to have some cash in small amounts with you. This hospital does not have a safe for valuables. Long Island Jewish Valley Stream cannot be responsible for any valuables that are kept in your room.

 

Rapid Response Team

You can call a group of specially trained individuals to respond if your condition worsens and you do not get the immediate care you need. Dial ext. 2222 to request this special service.

 

Smoking – Breathe Easy

Smoking is not permitted anywhere on the hospital campus. We offer “Quit-For-Keeps” to smokers, an outstanding program run by Northwell Health, located at 225 Community Dr., South Entrance, Great Neck. For more information about this program, call (516) 466-1980.

 

Visitation Policy

Visitors are welcome at any time during a patient’s stay. Visitors are limited to two at a time. Patients may choose who can and cannot visit them while they are in this health care facility. Visitors are not restricted or limited based on legal relationship, race, color, age, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability. Any limits or restrictions on visiting will be based on clinical reasons and will be explained to the patient and visitor. Reasons for restricting visitation may include safety concerns, patient request, the risk of infection and the need for rest and privacy. Children are welcome to visit, but those under age 16 should be supervised by a responsible adult. Family members of patients in surgery can wait in the main lobby or the surgical lounge. If you have any questions, talk to a caregiver in your clinical area.

 

What to Bring

You may wish to bring the following items from home:

 

  • pajamas, robe and slippers
  • eyeglasses
  • dentures and hearing aids
  • toothpaste and toothbrush
  • comb, hairbrush, shampoo
  • deodorant
  • soap
  • razor and shaving cream
  • notebook, pen or pencil
  • phone numbers of your family and friends
  • list of medications you take
  • photo ID

 

Your Room

To change the position of your bed, use the remote-control device or call your nurse for help. For your comfort, your room’s temperature may be controlled by the unit located below the window.

 

Please do not get out of bed by yourself or leave your room, unless you have your doctor’s permission. If you do get out of bed, make sure the bed is in the lowest position. If you leave your room, let nursing staff know where you are. Do not leave the unit unless you are with a staff member.

 

Additionally, please do not get in or out of a wheelchair without help. Be sure that the brakes are locked when you are getting out of the wheelchair.
